New legislation in the USA but Novak Djokovic still could miss the US Open and even the ATP Finals

Novak Djokovic got off to a bad start in 2022. The Serbian tennis player was barred from entering Australia, lost his right to compete in the Australian Open, and lost the subsequent lawsuit because he lacked the Covid-19 vaccine. For the same reason, Nole missed the Indian Wells and Miami Open.

Following that, Djokovic was permitted to participate in many European tournaments, most notably Roland Garros, courtesy of Europe lifting the prohibition on Covid-19. The United States, on the other hand, does not share this viewpoint. Anyone entering the U.s. must still present a full vaccine passport.

Djokovic has not yet received this, therefore his chances of playing in the US Open and two ATP 1000 tournaments, Montreal and Cincinnati, are nearly nil. Lew Sherr, CEO of the US Tennis Federation, stated in a recent statement that there would be no such event in Australia at the start of the year.

“We will strictly adhere to the advice of health officials and the government. The US Tennis Federation has no intention of repeating the mistake made earlier this year by the Australian Tennis Federation.”

With Wimbledon not counting for ATP points, Novak Djokovic is in danger of missing the ATP Finals in Turin this year. Between now and the ATP Finals, Nole has only two ATP 1000 tournaments that can help him get points: the Shanghai Masters and the Paris Masters.

With China still imposing stringent limits on Covid-19, the probability of the Shanghai Masters taking place remains uncertain. Novak Djokovic is currently rated ninth on the road to the ATP Finals. More importantly, the Serbian opponents will have the opportunity to gain points, whereas Nole has many tournaments that can only be watched on TV.

So, Novak Djokovic risks falling to his lowest ATP ranking since 2018, when an elbow injury caused him to tumble to number 22.

He hopes to win the 21st Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2022, but even if the Serbian does, his rating will not rise, but rather fall. Because there will be no bonus points for participants in Wimbledon 2022, the points they earned in 2021 will be removed. Thus, Djokovic has docked 2,000 points on July 10th. He would almost certainly slide out of the top 5, and if worst comes to worst, he could fall to number 8 before the US Open tournament.

However, Toni Nadal believes that his nephew, Rafael Nadal, is capable of winning Wimbledon but has a lower chance than Novak Djokovic.

“Rafa Nadal is good, and I believe he will be one of the best candidates at Wimbledon,” Toni Nadal remarked on the sidelines of the Mallorca Open on June 20. “The top title contender is still Novak Djokovic. Matteo Berrettini and Hubert Hurkacz, who have recently performed well, are also title favorites. Nadal must get through the first week. If he does, his chances of becoming the champion rise dramatically in the 2nd week.”

Djokovic

This year, Djokovic has lost the top spot twice, the first time in February and most recently on June 13. Because the Serbian was unable to engage in the AO and was ousted early at Roland Garros, he couldn’t prolong the number of weeks he spent atop the ATP ranking. He has been world No 1 for 373 weeks, which is 4 weeks less than Steffi Graf’s record.

Djokovic last dropped out of the top ten in 2018. After suffering a defeat in Roland Garros’ quarterfinals, “Nole” fell to number twenty-two. Djokovic was suffering from an elbow ailment at the time, and Marian Vajda was not coaching.

Djokovic has a lot of unknowns going into the 2nd half of the season. The drama that unfolded in Australia at the start of 2021 can be replayed at some big North American competitions, including the ATP Masters 1000 and Grand Slam in New York. The Telegraph reports that the Canadian and US governments won’t remove entrance restrictions until the end of 2022. If Djokovic continues to be unvaccinated, he won’t be permitted to take part in the US Open or the Rogers Cup.

In the absence of defending his 1,200-point US Open title, he can’t play in the ATP Finals. Many great tennis players, such as Hubert Hurkacz and Matteo Berrettini, have just rejoined, and the success of  Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime is putting Djokovic’s place in jeopardy.

The Serbian now sits ninth in the quest to qualify for the ATP Finals, with 1.970 points. He led Taylor Fritz by 180 points and Hurkacz by 100 points. Besides Wimbledon, the “Big 3” will be missing from the top 3 ATP spots for the first time since 2003. Federer fell 28 places this week, which is rarely seen in his performance.

Before that, Novak Djokovic took a four-week mental sabbatical before returning to Wimbledon on June 27 as his mental state is paramount right now. He is willing to prefer Wimbledon over any other tournament. He is the most popular player at Wimbledon, as Nadal is at Roland Garros.

Djokovic has won the last three Grand Slams. He lost only two sets on his way to his sixth London victory last year. Six ATP tournaments take place in June to prepare players for the year’s third Grand Slam, including two ATP 500 events at Halle and Queen’s Club. Djokovic has rarely competed in these tournaments in the past. Moreover, the ATP does not count this year’s Grand Slam because of the ban on Russian and Belarusian players.

Djokovic won 16 and lost 5 matches from the start of the season, including the Rome Masters. He also reached the Serbia Open final and the Madrid Open semi-finals. Wimbledon 2021 is Djokovic’s most recent Grand Slam trophy. He then lost to Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final, was denied entry to this year’s Australian Open owing to a lack of a vaccination passport, and fell to Nadal in the Roland Garros quarterfinals.
